Course Title: Recycling of Plastic Parts

Course Description: The Recycling of Plastics Parts course provides insight on in-process recycling including topics on the following: granulator selection, fines removal and drying, and metering of the regrind. Valuable information on mechanical recycling is given on such topics as, automotive dismantling and shredding, material identification, separation of materials, and processing. Several applications where recycled materials are used are also reviewed.

Overall Course Objectives:

Develop an understanding of the recycling of plastics (emphasis on automotive).
Gain knowledge concerning the processing of recycled materials, and how these materials are evaluated for quality.
Explore products made of recycled materials.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 – Introduction, In Process Recycling

Objectives:

Describe " in process" recycling.

Identify the factors to consider when selecting a granulator.

Recognize the importance of fines removal and the metering of regrind.

Lesson 2 – Mechanical Recycling

Objectives:

List the steps in the mechanical recycling process.

Identify the seven steps of the dismantling/recycling process for disposing of vehicles.

Recognize recycling symbols and abbreviations that are used to identify types of polymers.

Lesson 3 – Quality Control Programs, Applications Using Recycled Materials

Objectives:

Explain ways to maintain qualities such as dimensional tolerance and performance in producing parts with recycled material content.

Gain an understanding of plastics’ melt and physical properties, and the testing process.

Evaluate the examples of application using recycled materials.
