Course Description: The Rapid Tooling course will review advancements in existing tooling methods that accelerate the build of molds for prototype and short run production. New methods of reducing the build time for metal molds will be discussed including: using rapid prototyped parts to make mold inserts, and using high performance machining technology to CNC steel or aluminum molds. Rapid tooling design considerations, along with advantages and limitations are also reviewed.

Explore the options available for rapid tooling in manufacturing.
Identify advantages and limitations of the rapid tooling methods.
Recognize the techniques used for each type of tooling.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 – Introduction to Rapid Tooling

Objectives:

Define rapid tooling and list advantages and limitations.

Indicate the considerations that are needed prior to incorporating rapid tooling into the
design process.

List the different rapid tooling processes.

Lesson 2 – Types of Rapid Tooling I

Objectives:

Develop an understanding about RTV rubber or silicone tooling and composite tooling.

Recognize the methods used to build epoxy, polyester & machined aluminum molds .

Identify the advantages and limitations of RTV, composite, & machined aluminum tooling.

Lesson 3 – Types of Rapid Tooling II

Objectives:

Describe the Direct AIM tooling process & recognize considerations taken in choosing this rapid tooling method.

Recognize methods used to build Keltool molds.

Identify results of high performance/high speed machining that is applied to existing CNC machining methods.
