Course Description: The Rapid Prototyping course highlights the many technologies and concept modeling technologies, along with common features, that are available within the industry. Preparation, consideration factors, and analysis of rapid prototyping are other valuable topics are included in the course. Advantages and limitations of the various technologies of rapid prototyping are also discussed.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 – Introduction

Objectives:

Compare conventional prototyping methods to rapid prototyping technologies.

Define rapid prototyping, and recognize the advantages and limitations of the process.

Gain knowledge of the common features of rapid prototyping technologies.

Lesson 2 – Rapid Prototyping Technologies- Stereolithography, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

Objectives:

Understand the use of stereolithography & list its advantages & limitations.

Explain the Selective Laser Sintering method of rapid prototyping.

List advantages & limitations of the SLS method.

Lesson 3 – Rapid Prototyping Technologies – Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Solid Grand Curing (SGC)

Objectives:

Understand the laminated object manufacturing, method of rapid prototyping & identify advantages & limitations.

Explain the Fused Deposition Modeling process along with the advantages & limitations.

Understand the Solid Grand Curing process and list its advantages & limitations.

Lesson 4 – Direct Metal Rapid Prototyping

Objectives:

Compare & contrast the precision Optical Manufacturing Process to the LENS process of Direct Metal Rapid Prototyping.

Explain the “art to part” concept of Laser Additive Manufacturing Process.

Describe the Free Form Fabrication method of Direct Metal Rapid Prototyping.

Lesson 5 – Cost Justification, Overview and Summary of Rapid Prototyping

Objectives:

List some of the factors to consider in the cost justification process.

List considerations prior to fabrication using rapid prototyping.

Explain the “subtractive” & “addition” methods used in conventional rapid prototyping.
