Course Description: The topics discussed in the Quality Engineering for Plastics Manufacturing course are designed to assist in understanding quality management in its various incarnations and include the following: variation, tolerance, and quality control.  Defining the many benefits that could be gained from improving quality processes within a company, improved production, customer satisfaction, and reduced scrap, are also discussed.

Overall Course Objectives:

Lesson 1 – Introduction, The Nature of Variation, Types of Variation, Tolerances

Objectives:

• Understand the nature of variation.
• Distinguish between common cause variation and assignable cause variation.
• Define tolerances and recognize they are vital in the establishment of product uniformity.

Lesson 2 – What is Quality and What is Quality Control?, Statistical Methods, The Tools of SQC

Objectives:

• Differentiate between design and production quality.
• Understand how quality planning, control inspection, non-conforming product control, and acceptable procedure development are part of the quality program.
• Develop an understanding of statistical control methods, and recognize the three fields to 
  which statistical quality control techniques are applied.

Lesson 3 – The Benefits of a Quality System, Summary

Objectives:

• Understand the relationship between Quality & Production departments with respect to data.
• Recognize the importance of inspection methods in quality engineering.
• Identify benefits obtained from a quality system.
