Course Description: The Plastic Finishes Specifications course provides much information on the different finishing techniques and the specifications that accompany the type of material, application and surfaces being finished. The course discusses gloss and matte finishes, mold finishing, textured surfaces, as well as painted finishes specifications. Finally, the three other methods of finishing including: metallizing, hot stamping, and printing are also discussed.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 - Plastic Part Surfaces

Objectives:

Explain how the reflection of light varies between high gloss, partial gloss, and matte
finishes; and identify instruments used in measuring gloss.

Understand the mold finish standards, and the stages of the finishing operation.

Describe the texturing process for textured surface.

Lesson 2 - Painting, Specifications and Requirements

Objectives:

List methods used to apply coatings to plastic and the different types of coatings used.

Describe the areas in appearance, adhesion, and durability that a painted plastic part must meet.

Recognize the instruments used to measure the color levels and gloss of a coating.

Lesson 3 - Requirements and Non-Painted Part Finishes

Objectives:

Describe types of adhesion and durability testing performed on coatings.

Explain the vacuum metallizing process and hot stamping method of finishing.

Identify various printing methods used for decoration of plastic parts, and the factors to consider when using printing as a finishing method.
