Course Description: The Off-Line Painting of Interior and Exterior Parts course examines the painting of plastic parts in settings other than the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) assembly center. Methods used for pretreatment and handling of plastics are explained. The basics of how to design plastic parts to be painted without problems is also discussed.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 - Fundamentals

Objectives:

Recognize some of the different types of polymers that are used in automotive interior and exterior trim, and the coatings that are generally used.

Gain knowledge of the importance of surface treatments and how the process is done.

List debris or contaminants that must be removed before plastic parts are painted, and
describe the means of removing this debris.

Lesson 2 - Off Line Coatings Evaluation

Objectives:

Differentiate the measuring of gloss levels of interior and exterior trim.

Describe how the film thickness on painted plastic parts is measured.

Name the four categories which adhesion of paint to plastic is grouped, and identify types of adhesion testing.

Lesson 3 - Exterior Trim- Design for Paintability

Objectives:

Define openings, pockets, and edges, and list examples of each.

Develop an understanding of the difficulties in painting some exterior trim designs.

Explain why designs that incorporate sharp outside radii or tight inside radii are difficult to paint.
