Course Title: Multi-Color and Co-Injection Molding
6 Professional Development Hours/0.6 CEUs
Course
Description: The Multi-color and Co-Injection
Molding Course discusses and compares the different types of multi-material
molding such as Mono-Sandwich molding and Co-Injection molding. The
benefits and limitations of sandwich molding as well as the applications
where they are useful are also stated. The course reviews the materials used and
the issues that need to be considered with each, such as laminar flow,
fountain flow, material shrinkage, material viscosity, and adhesion of the
materials. Finally, the program highlights the different
types of equipment used in multi-material molding, the process controls
involved, and specific applications that have used multi-material molding.
Overall Course Objectives:
Develop a thorough understanding of material flow in molds.
Recognize the benefits and limitations of co-injection and sandwich molding.
Determine the technique that is best suited for an application by applying learned knowledge in reviewing actual parts.
Course Content:
Lesson 1 - Introduction
Objectives:
Identify the two main classifications of multi-material molding.
Distinguish the differences between mono-sandwich molding and co-injection molding.
State the benefits and limitations of sandwich molding.
Lesson 2 – Sandwich Molding
Objectives:
Define the primary rheological properties that make sandwich molding possible.
Develop basic understanding of material shrinkage,
material viscosity, and material
adhesion conditions in the sandwich
molding process.
State the advantages and disadvantages of
mono-sandwich molding compared to
co-injection molding.
Lesson 3 – Co-injection Molding, Specific Applications
Objectives:
List cost and quality advantages to the co-injection process.
Identify the two main elements of co-injection manifold, and state the importance to the
design considerations.Detect the process parameters critical to co-injection molding.
