Course Description: The Plastics Manufacturing and Processing course explains the fundamentals of injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion.  The processes are described, as well as the equipment used in these manufacturing methods.  Plastic part design and tooling design are also presented.

  • Recognize stages of the basic part design process, and how to determine service life requirements.
  • Understand the design basics of  plastic part structures such as ribs, bosses, undercuts, cored holes, fillets and radii.
  • List the critical concepts for injection molded part design.

Lesson 5 - Tooling

Objectives:

  • Understand the terminology and components used in building injection molds.
  • Differentiate between a two plate mold and a three plate mold.
  • Identify the functions of slide cams, core pulls, and lifters.
