Course
Title: Industrial
Finishing and Decorating
20
Professional Development Hours/2.0 CEUs
Course
Description: The
Industrial Finishing and Decorating course explains many of the ways in which
plastic parts may be painted or finished, including painting, pad and screen
printing, hot stamping, insert molding and chrome plating. The equipment and
processes are described as well as the many steps involved in the chrome plating
process. The course ends with a discussion of weathering processes and test
methods.
Overall Course Objectives:
- Understand
the in-mold decorating, pad printing, screen printing and hot stamping
methods for finishing plastic parts.
- Learn
about key paint concepts, application methods and applications
equipment.
- Gain
knowledge about the weathering of plastics and methods measuring
weathering resistance.
Course Content:
Lesson 1 - Plastic Part Finishing
Methods
Objectives:
- Describe
the in-mold decorating process and the two categories into which it is
divided, based upon which surface is decorated.
- Develop
an understanding of the functions of the pad printing system
components.
- List
the advantages of the screen printing process.
Lesson 2 - Plastic Part Finishes
Specifications
Objectives:
- Explain
how the reflection of light varies between high, medium, and low gloss
finishes, and identify instruments used in measuring gloss.
- List
the various components of a plastic finish specification.
- Differentiate
between visual and instrumental color measurement.
Lesson 3 - Paint Application and
Troubleshooting
Objectives:
- Explain
the two key paint concepts of rheology and surface tension.
- Understand
the coatings application process.
- List
the types of defects that can occur in a coating and the causes of the
defect.
Lesson
4 -
Chrome Plating
Objectives:
- Explain
what a resist is and how it is used in Chrome Plating.
- Understand
what must be done to a plastic surface in order to prepare it for the
chrome plating process.
- List
the various layers that are applied onto plastics to construct the
chrome plated surface.
Lesson
5 -
Weathering of Plastics and Colors
Objectives:
- List
the three main constituents of weathering and recognize the damaging
effects they have on polymers.
- Gain
knowledge of the weathering resistance of several polymer families,
and how to improve the ability to withstand weathering effects.
- Explain
the difference between natural and accelerated weathering.
