Course Description: The Insert Molding and Encapsulation course covers the techniques used in molding a wide variety of common plastic components. Insert molding is a form of injection molding where molten plastic is injected into the mold and surrounds or backs an insert previously placed in the mold. The insert can take a variety of forms, ranging from a threaded metal piece, a decorated film to another plastic or metal part. The machines, inserts, and the techniques of over molding and glass encapsulation are described. In mold decoration behind film and the encapsulation of electrical components are examined in detail.

Overall Course Objectives:

Lesson 1 - Insert Molding

Objectives:

• Gain knowledge on the equipment and tooling used for insert molding.
• List reasons why insert molding performed by an operator may not be the most optimal situation.
• Recognize some of the part design techniques used in overmolding that help insure the adhesion of the outer layer.

Lesson 2 - Molding Behind Film Inserts

Objectives:

• Describe the advantages of In-Mold Decoration (IMD) over the traditional decorating processes.
• Identify the shrinkage factors to consider when determining the size of the forming tool.
• Recognize the standard guidelines of traditional gating that apply to IMD.

Lesson 3 - Encapsulation

Objectives:

• List the two types of tooling for encapsulated coils and components.
• Differentiate transformer encapsulation to that of solenoid and sensor encapsulation.
• Identify key factors in selecting thermoplastic encapsulation resin.
