Title:
Design
Concepts for Injection Molds
8
Professional Development Hours/0.8 CEUs
Course
Description: The
Design Concepts for Injection Molds course discusses the critical features of a
mold design, including cavity number and placement, gating and feed
systems, parting line locations, cooling layout and ejection methods.
Other important factors which influence these mold design decisions
are also covered, including part production volumes, part function and
quality requirements, and the material selected for part production.
Overall Course Objectives:
- Understand the basics of mold design.
- Recognize the components used to build molds, and identify the
different types of molds.
- Develop a depth of knowledge about cooling systems, gate design,
sprue design, and part removal.
Course Content:
Lesson 1 - Introduction, Mold Frame, Types of Molds
Objectives:
- Recognize an ideal team for designing a part and mold, and
understand the roles they are responsible for.ns,
cooling layout, and ejection methods.
- Describe the mold base and components.
- Explain how the optimum number of cavities for a
mold is determined & identify the criteria used for cavity layout.
Lesson 2 - Cooling Layout, Runner and Sprue Design
Objectives:
- Compare a two plate mold to a three plate mold.
- Identify the types of cooling systems for molds.
- Recognize the advantages of proper runner and sprue design.
Lesson 3 - Gate Design, Ejection, Cored Holes and
Features, Slide Cams
Objectives:
- List the 3 variables in gate design and identify
common types of gates used in commonly shaped molded parts.
- Explain cored holes molding sequence.
- Recognize the functions of slide cams, core pulls, and
lifters.
Lesson 4 - Venting, Mold Materials, Quality
Evaluation of Mold During Build
Objectives:
- Explain why venting is important and identify methods of venting.
- Gain knowledge of mold materials, part surface and finishing
requirements.
- Recall quality evaluation of mold during build stages.
