Course Description: The Cost Reduction of Injection Molded Parts course addresses the many variables that affect the different stages of injection molding, including a number of processes dependent on operator set-up and several functions performed by auxiliary equipment.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 – Introduction, Material Selection, Part Design for Cost Reduction, Product Development

Objectives:

Recall the Lightspeed "Ten Steps Checklist" recommended for cost reduction and
continuous improvement.

Identify the main properties & characteristics for material that will help ensure proper material selection needed in the part design stage to reduce costs.

List advantages of reducing the thickness of the part wall overall or in certain areas.

Lesson 2 – Tooling Design for Cost Reduction, Equipment Requirements

Objectives:

Evaluate the cost savings incurred during the tooling design or mold build stage.

List the two ways ejection of parts from the mold contributes to overall cycle time.

Gain knowledge in equipment requirements and the relation to cost reduction and be aware of common scrap issues related to improper equipment selection.

Lesson 3 – Production Processing Window, Optimizing Process Conditions

Objectives:

Recognize the cost savings related to material processability, tooling features, and
processing parameters.

Explain how melt temperature and mold temperature are related to the cost reduction of
a part.

Identify cost reduction measures taken in part weight and residual stress level, and
recognize the potential repercussions.

Lesson 4 – Cycle Time Reduction, Secondary Operations, Finishing Operations, Summary

Objectives:

Understand cycle time reduction measures taken for cost reduction.

Describe the role secondary and finishing operations have in the cost reduction process.

Identify recommendations for reduction of dirt defects in the finishing operations.
