12 Professional Development Hours/1.2 CEUs
Course
Description: The
Corrosion course explains the corrosion of metals, beginning with the
electromotive series and the relation of activity potential to
susceptibility for corrosion. The different forms of corrosion are given,
along with illustrations detailing each. A guide to corrosion control is
provided, which includes an explanation of the corrosion resistant metals, recommendations
for surface treatments and a checklist for corrosion protection. A section
on design for corrosion resistance in automotive bodies is also included
which contains information on chemical reactions, likely locations of
corrosion on the vehicle body, and typical resistance treatments used in
the automotive industry. Design recommendations for
minimizing corrosion potential and commonly used tests for
evaluating corrosion resistance, are also detailed in the course.
Overall Course Objectives:
Develop an understanding of the electrochemical and physical/mechanical processes that cause corrosion.
Gain an understanding of the basics of corrosion protection by using a corrosion prevention checklist.
Identify types of corrosion.
Course Content:
Lesson 1 - Introduction, Oxidation Potential, Types of Corrosion
Objectives:
- List causes of different types of corrosion.
- Identify and explain characteristics of types of corrosion.
- Determine which electromotive or electrochemical series of metals/elements have a
higher or lower tendency to corrode.
