Course Description: The Chrome Plating on Metals and Plastics Course will describe the decorative chrome plating process on plastics as it relates to products used in the automotive, appliance, and plumbing industries. Also covered is the materials selection process and how its relation to metal and plastic materials. In addition, the course discusses the advantages and disadvantages of selective plating, as well as the plating process itself.

Overall Course Objectives:

Understand in detail the steps of the chrome plating process of plastics.
Understand the physical and chemical characteristics of each step in the chrome plating process.
Gain knowledge of the selection of materials and selective chrome plating.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 - Introduction, Design Considerations for Chrome Plating

Objectives:

Compare the electroplating process on plastics versus on metals, and indicate the
advantages and disadvantages.

Develop an understanding of the basic design recommendation for properly designing an electroplated plastic part.

Identify the design recommendation for Automotive Grilles.

Lesson 2 - Material Selection, Selective Plating

Objectives:

Compare the material selection for plating of plastic to the material selection of metal.

Describe the selective plating process.

List advantages and disadvantages to the selective plating process.

Lesson 3 - Plating Process – Part I

Objectives:

Understand the importance of surface preparation prior to plating.

Describe a typical plating rack building sequence, and recognize its importance to the electroplater.

Recognize the sequence and steps that a typical part molded from ABS would follow in the pre-plate stage.

Lesson 4 – Plating Process – Part II

Objectives:

Gain an understanding of the processing steps of interior and exterior plating and their
operating parameters.

Name 2 major functions of chrome deposit, and identify stages of corrosion of a plated part.

Explain physical vapor deposition and its advantages.
