Course Description: The Automation of the Injection Molding Process course deals with the fundamental concepts of automating an injection molding operation, from the arrival of the material in the facility, the material’s passage to and through the injection molding machine, and the handling of parts in the immediate vicinity of the molding machine. The focus will be upon the decision factors influencing choices about automation in and around the injection molding machine, and also on the technical aspects of equipment used in the automation process.

Overall Course Objectives:

Lesson 1 – Introduction, Why Automate?

Objectives:

• Recognize the factors involved when considering the automation process.
• Establish an understanding of the fundamental issues evaluated in automation.
• Identify the advantages and disadvantages of automation.

Lesson 2 – Getting Material to the Machine, At the Machine, Molded Part Handling

Objectives:

• Identify the factors necessary for success in molded part handling, and determine if a 
  manual system or conveying system is best.
• Gain an understanding of the different material handling delivery systems, and recognize 
  the advantages and disadvantages of each.
• Describe some of the press approaches to automating the molding process.

Lesson 3 – Robotic Systems, Summary

Objectives:

• Detect the components used in the systematic planning process of a robotic system 
  installation.
• Compare an integrated robotic system to a decoupled robotic system, and recognize the advantages of each.
• Distinguish functionality of the features in robot types and robot drive types.
