Course Description: The Aluminum Materials and Processing Methods Course will explore the properties and applications of aluminum, as well as highlight the advantages that only aluminum can provide for commercial and industrial applications. The various alloy manufacturing methods such as casting and machining, as well as the types of products derived from such methods, will be discussed.

Overall Course Objectives:

Understand the production of aluminum.
Identify the chemistry of the refining process and the electrolytic cell used for smelting.
Differentiate between the aluminum alloys, their alloying elements and primary applications for the alloys.

Course Content:

Lesson 1 - Aluminum Fundamentals

Objectives:

Develop an understanding of how aluminum is produced, and list mineral sources of
aluminum oxides.

Describe the refining and smelting process of aluminum.

Identify the two categories in which aluminum alloys are divided, and recognize typical applications of each.

Lesson 2 – Alloy Corrosion Resistance, Manufacturing and Applications

Objectives:

Understand the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys.

Select processes used for fabricated aluminum parts to be protected from corrosion.

Name the methods by which cast and wrought aluminum products are manufactured and identify typical applications of each.

Lesson 3 - Automotive Applications for Aluminum

Objectives:

Develop an understanding of the types of aluminum used in auto body fabrication.

Describe how the properties of aluminum affect the formability (as compared to steel).

List the common methods used for automotive assembly of aluminum structures.
