Professional Development Hours/1.0 CEUs
Course
Description: The Advanced Molded Part Design
course provides insight into the critical roles that are involved in the
success of a Simultaneous Engineering Project. It also highlights
molded part tolerances and insert molding. Detail on
structural design, including useful design formulas are also provided.
Overall Course Objectives:
- Understand the concepts of structural design for plastic
components.
- Be able to locate useful design formulas.
- Understand the coordinated roles of the design team in order to
minimize lead times and to avoid costly errors.
Course Content:
Lesson 1 - Introduction
Objectives:
- Describe each player's critical role in the success of a
simultaneous engineering project.
- Define an organized team of individuals representing the full
spectrum of disciplines involved in development.
- Understand the challenges and concerns of the original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) that need to be established at the onset of a
project.
Lesson 2 - Part Tolerances, Insert Molding,
Molding and Design Formulas
Objectives:
- List and explain the three most common factors that influence
dimensional control.
- Explain the insert molding method, and be able to categorize the
sub-components along with their effectiveness and risk factors.
- Expand knowledge on structural design and design formulas.
Lesson 3 – Specific Part Examples
Objectives:
- Identify examples of different types of loads.
- Describe the type of gears and distinguish the factors to
consider when designing gears.
- Differentiate common designs for plastic threads.
