Course
Title: Adhesives
and Sealants
14
Professional Development Hours/1.4 CEUs
Course
Description: The Adhesives and Sealants
Course describes the mechanisms, which can be postulated to explain the adhesion
of one material to another: (1) mechanical interlocking, (2) electrostatic
attraction (3) interdiffusion and (4) adsorption and surface reaction.
Mechanical interlocking can certainly be a significant factor in adhesion.
Another topic of discussion is the dominating adhesion mechanism, especially in the absence of
reactive groups, is the electrostatic attraction between the polar groups
of the adhesive to the adherends and to each other.
Overall Course Objectives:
- Describe the different types of surface treatment for plastics,
metals and composites.
- Learn about the different joints and how they are designed.
- Recognize the differences and similarities between adhesives and
sealants.
Course Content:
Lesson 1 - Fundamentals of Adhesion, Surface
Engineering
Objectives:
- Define adhesion and recognize the bonded assembly failure modes, and
different bonding mechanisms.
- Understand the importance of surface treatments and primers on
metals, thermoplastics,
and composites.
- Identify the tests available to measure the effectiveness of surface
preparation treatments
before and after bonding.
Lesson 2 - Design of Adhesive Joints, Adhesive
Selection
Objectives:
- List the four main types of stress found in adhesive joints, and
interpret stress analysis of adhesive joints.
- Select the most common joint design used in bonding flat adherends.
- Recognize the adhesive selection criteria.
Lesson 3 - Comparison of Adhesives, Bonding of
Plastics, Sealants
Objectives:
- Compare the major groups of adhesives based upon characteristics such
as temperature, and environmental resistance.
- Identify bonding processes that are reliable in the fastening of
plastic to itself, to another plastic, or to a non-plastic substrate.
- Define the features that sealants are generally classified by, and
identify material characteristics curing time.
